Chrysler Announces Major Indiana Expansions

On December 17th, The Chrysler Group LLC announced plans to invest $162 Million into a vacant industrial building in Tipton, Indiana that is estimated to produce nearly 850 jobs. The Tipton location is ideal for Chrysler which has located the majority of its transmission production operations in nearby Kokomo, Indiana.

The facility involved in this project was originally built for trnsmission production in 2008 as a joint venture between Chrysler and Getrag. The deal fell through when the recession impacted the automobile market, and the venture was discontinued.

Abound Solar had announced plans  to use the building for solar panel production, but its agreement also fell through after its markets weakened and the company filed for bankruptcy.

Tipton County has allowed for tax abatement on the property as an incentive to Chrysler to pursue its investment plans.

Hours after the approval of the tax abatement request by Tipton, Chrysler has today (December 18) announced the additional expansion of its Kokomo operations. This investment will pump $212 million into the Kokomo plants and create hiring opportunities for more than 400 new employees.

The combination of these two investments will make the central Indiana region the largest transmission installation in the world.
